I have been having a lot of fun over the past few weeks being part of a Thayer County Community Theater production, “Rollin’ in Dough in Mistletoe.” It’s a one-act Christmas melodrama—just pure silliness and fun. By the time you read this, the performances will be over, but whether I remember my lines or not remains to be seen!
I’ve enjoyed the fun of acting and also of getting to know some great new people, as well seeing a whole new side of some members of my congregation! I’ve judged speech events for many years but haven’t been on stage myself since high school. Our senior play at Deshler High was “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes,” and I loved playing the sarcastic sidekick, Dorothy, as she joined her friend Lorelei on the hunt for a rich husband. Looking for a picture of that 1984 production brought back great memories.
It takes a lot of dedication and time to pull off even a small production. I’m reminded of all of the plays our son participated in at Republic County High School (two each year) and the many, many hours his director, my sister-in-law, Deb, dedicated to rehearsals, set construction, and all of the other details involved. But the hard work paid off with outstanding shows, such as “The Pink Panter Returns,” “You Can’t Take It with You,” and “Arsenic and Old Lace.”
Thinking about the dedication of actors, athletes, musicians, or anyone else who strives to perfect their craft, reminded me of the scripture, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.” (Colossians 3:23) This applies to our daily occupations, our role in our family, and the outside interests we pursue. God gave us all these abilities and opportunities, and he delights in our using them to do our best and to give him glory. We are blessed.
